T he lone road out of Ras al-Ayn was empty, except for one overladen lorry that slowly made its way along a lethal mile from war zone to exile. Shells thudded into buildings in the distance as Kurdish forces in vans prepared to race jets and sniper fire, trying to get to a battle that almost everyone else had left. Those who remained in the border town at the frontline of the war for north-eastern Syria were there to fight; the Kurds rallying to defend it and the Arabs preparing to seize it from them.
No, Russian ground troops are not going to fight Isis. That was never the intention. But the Russians have to be up in the desert to the east of the Aleppo-Hama-Homs-Damascus axis, both to train the Syrian tank crews and maintain an eastern base of forward air controllers to guide the Sukhoi bombers on to their night-time targets.
Dr Katharine Jones of Coventry University reports that Lebanon has 'the worst forms of child labour' with forced child marriages on the increase. She also claims that many of the girls who leave the sweat shops and farmlands end up working as child prostitutes - in some cases providing sexual services to accompany their mothers' 'survival sex' with Lebanese employers. In the backroom of an airy workshop in Amman, Jordan, about a dozen Syrian and Jordanian women are sitting next to each other embroidering palm trees between rows of camels. Nearby, another group form an assembly line for pink tassels, with two women counting and re-counting the fine threads that go into each bundle. Next to them are seamstresses who attach the swingy fringes to a cactus-printed fabric by hand.
At a supermarket in Gaziantep, Huda is shopping for eggs, rice and bread to feed her four children. She is using the money left over after paying the rent. A Syrian refugee in Turkeyshe no longer has to queue for food handouts or at soup kitchens.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2, Malaysia's low-cost carrier terminal, has none of the usual trimmings of an international airport. The long corridors, lined with unwelcoming, utilitarian benches, lead to a cavernous immigration hall. The terminal is cold from the constant air-conditioning, with loud, echoing acoustics and the relentless high-pitched jingle of loudspeakers.
Readers, a small detective story. I found all these numerals printed on the side of a spent missile casing lying in the basement of a bombed-out Islamist base in eastern Aleppo last year. Shareholders include the Bank of America and Deutsche Bank.

It consists of a hollow saddle -like seat containing two powerful electric motorsmotor speed controller boards, gearing, pullies and a platform on cranked axles such that a ridge on the top of the unit can be made to vibrate through a range of speeds as set using a wired external hand controller, and an upward pointing shaft set on an angle through the ridge can be made to rotate at speeds from zero rpm to several hundred rpm, again by use of the wired remote control. Flexible moulded attachments are supplied which fit over the vibrating ridge and shaft which mostly have integrated dildos on their top. In use, the rider locates the dildo into their body cavity for internal stimulation while pressing their external erogenous parts on the vibrating ridge.
