The Daily Dose July 27, The Netflix documentary The Bleeding Edge shows how when the medical device industry rushes to innovate, patients often pay a devastating price. The result is a Wild West of industry that finds ways to short-circuit clinical trials and circumvent Food and Drug Administration regulations, sometimes staying just right of the law and sometimes not.
Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance MGUS is an asymptomatic pre-malignant clonal condition which is diagnosed, often coincidentally, through high levels of immunoglobulin derived serum M-protein produced by a plasma cell clone. Both MGUS and MM show familial clustering among and between these diseases, suggesting that they share genetic susceptibility. However, borderline increases of bladder cancers relative risk 1.
We wanted to find early, predictive signs of cancer that would allow us to screen people and monitor those found to be at risk. By detecting MGUS, which predicts the development of multiple myeloma, we are able to do that. Previous studies have suggested that MGUS and multiple myeloma tend to develop after exposure to toxic chemicals.
The neoplasm of plasma cells is a group of diseases encompassing from monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance MGUS to multiple myeloma MM. Conglomerates of monoclonal plasma cells are called plasmacytomas and are included in this group. The existence of extramedullary plasmacytomas has also been described.

Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance MGUS is a non-cancerous, or benign, condition characterized by the presence in the blood of an abnormal protein produced by plasma cells. Plasma cells, found in the bone marrow and in blood, normally produce antibodies that fight infection. The abnormal protein is referred to as an M—protein or paraprotein. It is monoclonal, which means that it is produced by one family of cells that are all identical copies of each other.
Benign monoclonal gammopathy is an abnormal clonal disorder of plasma cells. Also known as monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance MGUSbenign monoclonal gammopathy is, by definition, an asymptomatic condition. If a patient has symptoms that are thought related to this disorder see history and exam belowit can no longer be considered a benign finding.
